Bormio, Italy - ski resort review

FREESTYLE SNOWPARK

Bormio is a medieval town situated in the Rhaetan part of the Alps near the Austrian and Swiss borders. Since the ancient times, local thermal waters were well known for their curative powers and town's origins are binded with them. Long history results in abundance of architecture styles what makes the place more worth a visit. Bormio is not like any other ski resort. It gives the tourist possibility of experiencing the everyday life of a small town absolutely unsimilar to regular ski resorts. Instead of large condominiums and modern hotels in the centre, you will find traditional buildings, churches, walk along cobblestone streets and see citizens of a small town in their everyday life.

Bormio's 1792 meter vertical drop is one of three biggest in Italy what makes the resort more attractive to skiers preferring long runs from the top of the mountain back down to the resort. The longest run is almost 14 kilometers long and you will find many more of similar lenght. The routes are artificially snowed so that the skiing conditions are guaranteed at the top level. Large vertical drop should not threaten beginners as the runs are rather gentle. Advanced skiers will have a bit limited choice but still should be satisfied with off-piste skiing. The 1995 World Championships in downhill were held in Bormio.

The temperatures in Bormio are rather moderate, what allows the snow stay on the routes and the skiers not to freeze. However, winds get stronger in the afternoon and the slopes may become a bit icy. Generally, lower trails do better in the afternoon thanks to snow making equipment. As a small town, Bormio has pretty much to offer as far as apres ski activities are concerned. Plenty of bars, cafes, restauarants and even a disco will not disappoint anyone.
